Specialist Physiotherapy

Specialist Physiotherapy for Jaw, Facial, Head and Neck Conditions

Physiotherapy is at the heart of Midlands Jaw Physiotherapy.

I provide specialist physiotherapy for conditions affecting the jaw, face, head and neck, combining detailed assessment with individualised treatment and rehabilitation.

Rather than treating a single painful area in isolation, I look at how your symptoms, movement, muscles and contributing factors interact to develop a treatment plan around your individual needs and goals.

What Does Specialist Physiotherapy Involve?

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, how they started and how they affect your everyday life.

I will assess the relevant areas of your jaw, face, head and neck and consider how they may be interacting. Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessing movement, muscle function, joint mobility and contributing habits or behaviours.

We will then discuss the findings and agree an individualised treatment plan.

Treatment Approaches

Your treatment will depend on your individual assessment and may include:

Exercise & Movement Rehabilitation

Specific exercises to improve movement, strength, coordination, muscle control and confidence with everyday activities.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on treatment may be used where appropriate to address pain, movement restrictions or muscle and joint dysfunction.

Education & Self-Management

Understanding your symptoms is an important part of treatment. I'll help you understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and provide practical strategies to manage them between appointments.

Facial Rehabilitation

Specialist facial movement retraining may be used following facial palsy, facial nerve injury, synkinesis or facial surgery.

Acupuncture & Dry Needling

These techniques may be used as an adjunct to physiotherapy for selected patients, depending on their symptoms and treatment goals.

Medical Botulinum Toxin

For selected conditions, medical botulinum toxin may form part of a wider treatment and rehabilitation programme.

At Midlands Jaw Physiotherapy, this treatment is provided by a specialist physiotherapist and Independent Prescriber with specialist experience in facial palsy, jaw disorders, hemifacial spasm and cervical dystonia.

Why Choose Specialist Physiotherapy

Many jaw, facial, head and neck conditions overlap. Symptoms in one area can sometimes be influenced by what is happening elsewhere.

For example, someone with jaw pain may also experience headaches and neck tension, while someone recovering from facial palsy may develop changes in facial movement alongside jaw or neck symptoms.

My specialist experience allows these relationships to be considered as part of your assessment rather than treating each symptom separately.

The aim is to understand why you are experiencing your symptoms, improve your movement and function, and give you practical tools to manage your condition with confidence.

Your Treatment Plan

There is no standard treatment programme that is right for everyone.

Your treatment plan will be based on your assessment, diagnosis, symptoms and goals. It may involve one or more treatment approaches and can be adapted as your symptoms change.

Where appropriate, I may also work alongside other healthcare professionals involved in your care.
